This was a really interesting piece to do to accompany Dr Rae of the Sackler Centre, Sussex’s research: “Face perception enhances insula and motor network reactivity in Tourette syndrome” published in Brain.

In this image we’re showing that the insula and then the motor network in the brain lights up for individuals with Tourette Syndrome when they see faces. In other words, when individuals with Tourette Syndrome see faces, they’re more likely to experience tics (at least two motor and one vocal) when they feel like they’re being watched, no matter how hard they try to suppress the tics.
Dr Rae was my first official commission actually, and helped me play professional in this sense (you always need a helping hand at first to get your feet) so I’m very grateful she kept a close eye on my FAQs and invoices to make sure it was all above board from her perspective!
